The Language section of the UPESSC (formerly UPSESSB) TGT English examination rewards two things above all: precise knowledge of grammatical rules and the speed to apply them under pressure. Most candidates do not fail this section for want of effort; they lose marks on a handful of recurring traps — the wrong preposition, a slipped tense, a subject that does not agree with its verb, a comparative that should have taken to rather than than.
This book has been designed as a competitive examination guide rather than an academic grammar. Every chapter moves from clear theory to the points that are actually tested: the rules examiners love, the exceptions they hide in distractors, the pairs they deliberately confuse, and the shortcuts that let you answer in seconds. Each chapter follows the same dependable structure — Introduction and weightage, Learning Objectives, step-by-step Theory with tables and solved examples, a bank of Common Exam Errors, Exam Tricks, Frequently Confused Pairs, Exceptions, Previous Exam Pattern, a one-page Quick Revision, and fifty original multiple-choice questions graded from easy to difficult with full explanations.
The book is written in Standard British English, the variety expected in Indian competitive examinations, while retaining the traditional grammatical terminology (Accidence, Syntax, the eight parts of speech) familiar to candidates from Wren & Martin and Nesfield. Modern descriptive labels (determiners, gradable adjectives) are introduced where examiners now use them.
Used steadily — one chapter at a time, theory first and then the MCQs under timed conditions — this guide will take you from the foundations of grammar to the confident, rapid accuracy the examination demands. We wish you every success.
How to Use This Book
- Follow the order. The chapters are arranged so that each builds on the last — sentences and parts of speech first, then the word classes, then the larger systems (tenses, agreement, voice, narration), and finally vocabulary, transformation, and full practice.
- Read theory actively. Cover the answer in each solved example and attempt it first; then check. Pay special attention to the boxed Exam Tips, Warnings and Memory Tricks.
- Master the error tables. The "Common Exam Errors" and "Frequently Confused Pairs" in every chapter are distilled from the points most often tested. Revise them repeatedly.
- Attempt the MCQs under time. Each chapter has 50 questions (15 easy, 20 moderate, 15 difficult). Give yourself about 30–35 minutes per set, then study every explanation — including those for questions you answered correctly.
- Use the revision chapters. Chapter 31 (Common Errors), Chapter 33 (Practice Exercises) and Chapter 34 (Grand Revision) are for the final fortnight before the examination.
- Keep a personal error log. Note every mistake you make; the questions you get wrong are the syllabus you have not yet mastered.
